Everyone knows about feta. It is the most famous white, soft crumbly Greek cheese with a salty/peppery taste. It is the oldest cheese in the world and originates in ancient Greek times. The first time is is written about is in Homer's Odyssey, where he mentions that Polifimos the cyclops made feta (Odyssey, Verse 1, Lines 216-249)
With the passing of time, other famous cheeses joined the long list of Greek cheeses such as sfela, touloumi, parmesan, gruyere, myzithra, anthostyros, ladotiros, yellow cheese and kopanisti. Other dairy products also gained world recognition such as pure butter and Greek yoghurt.
Nowadays, the production of feta and other cheeses continues in the tradition way as well at within modern dairies. Messinian cheeses stand out due to its exquisite and unique taste.
You’ll spend a lovely day on the farm and at an award winning dairy, where you will learn about the secrets, see the traditional production process and be given the chance to try famous Messinian cheeses.
You will learn how to correctly mix the milk, the temperature for cheese making, cutting the curd, draining, pressing, salting and maturation needed for each type of cheese.
After learning about Messinian cheese the road will lead us back to our farm to end this wonderful day. At the farm we will enjoy wine with a variety of Messinian cheeses like feta, sfela, gruyere, parmesan, myzithra and anthotiro accompanied by traditionally baked bread and traditional Greek snacks.
Children can explore the farm, enjoy a bike ride around the village and try archery and other games.
Afterwards you will enjoy a fantastic traditional meal on our farm, where Messinian cheeses will have the place of honour, with pride of place being given to our farm’s ladotiro and local myzithra. Of course there will also be a Greek salad, decorated with local feta and oregano, capers and virgin olive oil from our farm.
After everything, and filled with authentic experiences and knowledge we will return you to our meeting point.
